Supplement December 2018

Here’s an opportunity with a January 4 application deadline: Preparation Workshop for New Racial Healing Circle Practitioners

Brief description:

The American Library Association (ALA) invites applications from librarians and library workers who would like to participate in the Preparation Workshop for New Racial Healing Circle Practitioners, which will take place at the Warwick Allerton in Chicago, Illinois on March 21-22, 2019. This workshop is being offered in collaboration with the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Successful applicants will receive a $400 stipend to offset travel expenses, up to 3 nights’ lodging in Chicago, and complimentary registration for the 2-day workshop including support materials and some meals. Additional expenses such as ground transportation and meals not provided during the workshop must be covered by the participant.

The Preparation Workshop for New Racial Healing Circle Practitioners is an opportunity for library staff who are participating or have applied to participate in ALA’s TRHT Great Stories Club, representatives from the AAC&U’s TRHT Campus Centers, and other interested library professionals to receive information about racial healing circle methodology, participate with peers in a racial healing session, and engage in a session design and co-facilitation process. Workshop activity will take place from 10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 and 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. pm Friday, March 22, at the Warwick Allerton (701 Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611).

December 2018

Greetings,
Each month, the ILA Committee for Diversity & Inclusion shares resources on issues relating to diversity and inclusion. Here is another of our emails with items that may be of interest or value to those seeking to learn more about diversity, inclusion, and social justice. While we know we can’t be comprehensive, we do our best to collect timely resources on library-related issues and share those every few weeks. If you have resources that fall under the diversity and inclusion umbrella you feel might be helpful or interesting for the ILA membership, please send them my way and I will work with the committee to share them out as appropriate.
Sincerely,
Cara B. Stone
Chair, Committee for Diversity & Inclusion

August 2018

Greetings,
Each Month, the ILA Committee for Diversity & Inclusion shares resources out on issues relating to diversity and inclusion. Here is another of our emails with items that may be of interest or value to those seeking to learn more about diversity, inclusion, and social justice. While we know we can’t be comprehensive, we do our best to collect timely resources on library-related issues and share those every few weeks. This month we have included a Special Topic section focusing on the conversations surrounding the ALA Library Bill of Rights Meeting Room Interpretation. We have also included a section with other topics below that. If you have resources that fall under the diversity and inclusion umbrella you feel might be helpful or interesting for the ILA membership, please send them my way and I will work with the committee to share them out as appropriate.
Sincerely,
Cara B. Stone

Special Topic: ALA Library Bill of Rights Meeting Room Interpretation
ALA Council special online vote to take place Aug. 9 re: whether or not to rescind new Meeting Room Interpretation

  • Follow the conversation on the ALA Council Meeting Room Discussion Board: https://tinyurl.com/Meeting-Room-Discussion (should be public)
“The ALA Executive Board met on July 20, 2018 and unanimously voted to allow an on-line vote of Council on the Resolution to Rescind Meeting Rooms: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights (2017-2018 ALA CD#19.6_62617_act).

Discussion of this resolution will now proceed in this ALA Connect space from Thursday, July 26 through Thursday, August 9.

On Thursday, August 9, discussion will close and the poll will open. ALA Council will then proceed to an electronic ballot and vote on the resolution via Connect poll from August 9 through August 16. The ALA Governance Office staff will provide a link to the poll which will only be open to Councilors. Please note that this is not an anonymous poll as people's names will be associated with their votes the way they are in open Council meetings. The results of the vote will be announced on August 17.

As a reminder, for an on-line vote to be valid, at least 50 percent of Councilors must participate. According to the ALA By-laws, approval of the resolution in an electronic vote requires a 75 percent majority of those voting Yes or No.

The resolution is attached here for reference.

This is the version Council approved at Annual 2018, which is currently in effect, and which the motion at hand would rescind: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/librarybill/interpretations/meetingrooms

If the current motion passes, we would revert to the 1991 version, which was in effect until Annual 2018: https://alair.ala.org/handle/11213/1622

Then the IFC working group would draft their new revision and share it by 2018-10-01, which presumably Council will vote on at Midwinter after further revisions.

March 2018

Greetings,

It has been just over one year since we began sending our Diversity & Inclusion Resource Round-Up emails. As always, if you have resources that fall under the diversity and inclusion umbrella you feel might be helpful or interesting for the ILA membership, please feel free to send them my way and I will work with the committee to share them out as appropriate. The ILA Committee for Diversity & Inclusion’s charge includes promoting awareness of issues relating to diversity and inclusion to the greater ILA membership. While we know we can’t be comprehensive, we will do our best to collect timely resources on library-related issues and share those approximately once per month.

We are also working to conduct an assessment of needs survey to learn more about Iowa library employees, their experiences, and the communities they serve. The survey will gather baseline demographic information from library professionals and will focus on experiences and interests in relation to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek the input of all voices within the library, including part-time staff, full-time staff, trustees/board members, retired professionals, and administrators, as we value bringing all perspectives to the table, including those who are not ILA members. Be watching for that survey to launch in April and, when it arrives, please share it with your colleagues.

Sincerely,
Cara B. Stone
Chair, ILA Ad Hoc Committee for Diversity & Inclusion
