August 2022

Hello from ILA's Committee for Diversity and Inclusion!

I am heading out for vacation tomorrow, so you're getting this month's resource roundup a bit earlier than usual. Hopefully many of you have gotten or will soon get a nice break as well ðŸ˜Š

In addition to sharing resources about our committee's next Social Justice Discussion, I also want to share with all of you that CD&I will be presenting an un-conference book discussion at this year's ILA conference. We'll be talking about How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi and looking at ways to apply those ideas to our work in libraries. Ideally, we'd love it if everyone who attends our session reads the book ahead of time, but you're welcome to join us even if you haven't read the text. We'll be hosting this discussion on the Friday morning of the conference (October 14) during the 10:10 AM breakouts, and we'd love to see all of you there!

October 2022 Social Justice Discussion Group - Trauma-Informed Librarianship

Throughout the next month we’ll be reading, watching, and listening to resources about trauma-informed librarianship. Please explore these resources with us and join us for a discussion or two. Discussions will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, October 5 at 10:00 am and Monday, October 10 at 2:00 pm (Meeting ID: 864 3832 3094, Passcode: 427944).

We would love it if you joined us for either or both discussions. The level of participation is up to you; you may actively contribute or just listen and learn.

As always, if you come across any resources that fall under the diversity and inclusion umbrella, please send them my way and I will work to include them in the Resource Roundup or to otherwise share them as appropriate.

Amanda Bellis

January 2022

Greetings from ILA’s Committee for Diversity and Inclusion!

Each month we send out a list of resources that are focused on topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice but first, please join me in congratulating Deana Cunningham, Access Services Associate at Drake University, who is this year’s recipient of the ILA for All award!

Throughout 2022 our committee will continue to host bimonthly Social Justice Discussion Groups via Zoom. Resources for discussion topics will be included in the Resource Roundup, and we invite everyone to join us and to share any future topics you’d like to discuss with library staff around the state.

Throughout the month of January, we have been reading, watching, and listening to resources around the topic of Intellectual Freedom, a subject that is certainly at the forefront of many of our minds right now. Our first discussions of the year will focus on this topic, and are scheduled for February 2nd at 10:00 am (passcode 156568) and February 14th at 2:00 pm (passcode 156568).

We would love it if you joined us for either or both calls. The level of participation is up to each attendee; you may actively contribute to the discussion or just listen and learn. Here are some resources for the discussion groups:

ILA Committee for Diversity & Inclusion seeking new members

 Happy Friday everyone!

As you’re renewing (or joining) ILA for next year, please consider increasing your involvement by serving on a committee and/or subdivision. Several are seeking new members for the coming year, and I’d like to plug the diversity and inclusion committee

A little bit about CD&I: The purpose of the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion is to advance awareness and improve service to a wide range of often underserved populations in Iowa. The Committee will promote awareness of issues related to traditionally underrepresented groups. Our regular activities include a monthly meeting (about an hour once a month, meeting virtually), bi-monthly social justice discussion groups (facilitated by a couple of committee members each time), and collecting/distributing a monthly resource round-up of links related to topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

If you or someone you know would be a great fit for the committee, please fill out the ILA Volunteer Form 1 and let us know! If you have any questions about the committee please feel free to reach out to me as the committee chair.

Thanks!
